The night opened with a red carpet appearance by Patricia Clarkson amongst the Miami Dade community. She was greeted by our very own MDC’s president Eduardo J. Padrón. She was captured in pictures with the Festival’s Director of Programming Jaie Laplante and Senior Programmer, Carl Spence.
The Miami Film Festival 2019 honored Patricia Clarkson, with The Precious Gem Award for her outstanding work in cinema. A vast montage of all her major roles in award-winning movies was shown followed by a sit down interview was conducted by Tatiana Siegel from The Hollywood Reporter. They touched on topics such as challenging roles to play, nudity that is essential, and her co-star crushes such as Leonardo DiCaprio. What I took away from the discussion is to dig deep within yourself to achieve any goal, and as a woman, to pave your own way. Clarkson was an entertaining from the get go. She spoke of her underwear and had the entire fest audience on the floor laughing. She is truly remarkable inside and out. Have you seen those legs?
The interview was followed by the festival premiere screening of the film The Party by Sally Potter.
The Party is a dark comedy about a group of friends and frenemy’s who are all invited to a cocktail dinner hosted by Janet, played by Kristin Thomas, a political representative in the film. The reason for the gathering was to celebrate Janet and the party election. Which is a play on words with the film title and also a hidden theme throughout the film. Some other themes were honesty, betrayal, the triumph, and tragedy of love and society’s depiction of others.
April, played by Patricia Clarkson stole the screen with her effortless delivery and snarky, witty remarks. Her co-stars were the late Bruno Ganz who played her husband Gottfried who was the healer. Bill, Janet’s husband played by Timothy Spall. Martha, Bill’s classmate played by Cherry Jones. The writing by Sally Potter was meticulously clever and every character was essential and enjoyable to watch on screen.
