An unfulfilled promise doesn’t mean it is a broken promise.
The Last Suit tells the story of Abraham Bursztein, played by Miguel Ángel Solá, a survivor from the concentration camps in Warsaw. He has a loving family in Argentina and his daughters agree to send him to a retirement center, he then decides to flee and fulfill a promise he made to a best friend from his childhood. Even though he is not in most of the movie, Piotrek plays a really important part in Abraham’s life.
Throughout the film we learn more and more about Abraham and his family, answering some questions about his past. The relationships he creates with everyone he encounters on his way to Lodz, Poland, are crucial for the character development in the story. You could say, he got really lucky by encountering everyone he meets on the way.
Something I wasn’t expecting when I entered the theatre was to see a black and white movie, but it made sense, and it also made the film what it is. This complex character is just trying to get through the present to revisit those dark but vivid memories of the past, making them colorful. The movie was very entertaining, it began with very funny moments and turned more dramatic as the character got closer and closer to his destination. There are so many stories to tell, I am glad Pablo Solartz decided to tell this one. Before The Last Suit, a short called “The Driver is Red” was shown. This spy short was an animated documentary on the capture of third reich killer Adolf Eichmann in Argentina, I highly recommend this one too.
